Margaret Cameron, Box 621, Long Sault, Ontario KOC 1PO
Dear Mr. MacLaren,
How interesting to read your message on GenForum today about a MacLean family which settled in Finch Township, Stormont County, Ontario. My gtgtgrandmother, Sarah MacLean, was a widow whose youngest son was born in1843 on the Isle of Mull. From what I have been told this familytravelled with relatives on the 'Catharine' of Belfast in c 1843. Sarah'sson, Lachlan MacLean, born Aug. 8, 1826, Isle of Mull, was my gtgrandfather. Lachlan's first cousin was Hector MacLean, born l823(Druimghigha, Isle of Mull), d. 1898 - tombstones for both Hector andLachlan are in the Finch Cemetery. My gt grandfather's first cousin,Hector MacLean was married to Janet MacLean(on tombstone). Most of thefamily were born on the farms of Burg, Redal and Druimghigha (Torloisk)Would the name "Dun Auladh" be translated as Donalda or, perhaps, aphonetic renditon of the Gaelic.
Perhaps the above is coincidental to your message, but I don't know ofanother 'Hector', born c 1823, that settled within Finch Township, although that is a possibility. The only widow of whom I know thattravelled with relatives c 1843, was my gt grandmother, Sarah MacLean, tosettle within Finch Township (on first concession). Interesting.
Sincerely,
I am very interested in contacting descendents of Alex MacLeod, who Margaret Cameron describes below:
"the late Alex MacLeod, a lawyer in Winnipeg (nephew of Hector MacLean) wrote to my mother (Hope MacLean Cameron) in 1937 which outlined therelationship between our families. He and my grandfather, George LachlanMacLean (1863-1937) had been cousins as well as friends."
"In the letter written by Alex MacLeod it is very difficult to decipherthe address for his only daughter."I have one daughter, 39(1937), livingin B.C. 115..... north of Vancouver and Victoria. She has three girls,11, 9, and 8....I spend much of my time in thought at their ranch atQuathiaski(?) Cove B.C."
