- Sir John was Governor of Dumbarton Castle in 1427. Sir John was lured into am ambush at the Island of Inchmurrin, in Loch Lommond, on 24 Sep. 1439. He was killed along with 120 of his men. This ended his term of office as head of the Clan Colquhoun and of Luss.
As John Culqwon, he was Sheriff of Dumbarton Castle in the minority reign of King James II.
In 1424, he held the office of Governor of Dumbarton Castle. He was a patron of the Parish Church of Luss. He was a member of parliament in 1437 during the commencement of the reign of King James the Second.
