- "E Mail from Steven Bushnell ,10/21/01
"...the woman you have identified as "Catherine Romanovitch" (see below)is in fact Catherine Simonovna Woronzow (variously spelled in English). The "Romanovitch" comes from her father's patronymic, his middle name, formed from that of his father. He is, then, Count Simon RomanovitchWoronzow (his father's given name was Roman; the family name is Woronzow, now generally transliterated as Vorontsov).
Catherine's father was the Russian ambassador to Great Britain; herbrother, Count (later Prince) Michael Simonovitch Vorontsov, was awell-known figure of Russian history.
She married George Herbert in an Orthodox church in London in 1808 anddied
in 1856. Sidney, Lord Herbert of Lea, (d. 1861) was their son."
Note: Burkes Peerage has her father as Simon Romanovitch but at theBrian Tompsett web site it has her as daugter of Simon Woronzow, CountWoronzow. http://www.dcs.hull.ac.uk/cgi-bin/gedlkup/n=royal?royal25789
