- He was given the name of John Hamilton-Dalrymple at birth.
He gained the rank of Cornet in 1785 in the service of the 28th Light Dragoons, the rank of Lieutenant in 1797, Captain in 1800.
He was also Captain in 1803 in the service of the 73rd Regiment of Foot, Captain in 1803 in the service of the 42nd Regiment of Foot.
He gained the rank of Major in 1805 in the service of the 64th Regmnet of Foot and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1805 in the service of the 10th Regiment of Foot and in 1806 in the 22nd Regiment of Foot
He was Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Haddington Burghs between 1805 and 1806.
He gained the rank of Brevet Colonel in 1813. and Major-General in 1819.
He succeeded to the title of 5th Baronet Dalrymple, of North Berwick, co. Haddington [N.S., 1698] on 23 February 1834.
