  He graduated from the eighth grade at Schwab School, attended Issac Litton High School and earned his GED while serving in the U.S. Navy, he graduated from the Nashville Auto Diesel College, attended classes at Volunteer State Community College and Brevard County Community College in Melbourne, Fla. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a plumber, carpenter, home mechanic and a jack-of-all-trades. Member of the N.A.C.L., a letter carrier for the post office in Madison for 16 years, served on the beer board and the parks board for the city of Hendersonville in the late 1960s, a member of the D.A.V. and the American Legion.
