DAVID G. DOUGLASS was born in Chautauqua County, N.Y., Dece mber 4, 1827, the oldest son of Joel and Mahala (Green) Dou glass, who were natives of Vermont and honest and industrio us people. At eleven years of age he became a resident of t he Hoosier State which has been his home, largely, ever sin ce. February 19, 1849, his marriage with Miss Catharine, da ughter of James and Celia (Bales) Helton was solemnized, an d to their union this family has been born: James W., Georg e W., one that died in infancy unnamed, Sarah C., Clovis O . (deceased), A. B., Stephen A. (deceased), William L., Mar y E., Grant and Eler. Mr. Douglass began life a poor boy, b ut by diligence and economy has secured a creditable farm o f 238 acres, besides a saw-mill and corn-mill.
