OBITUARY
GEORGE DOUGLAS
In the death of George Douglas last Saturday evening Esquesingtownship lost one of nature's noblemen. He was a man who enjoyed thehighest esteem of the neighborhood. True as steel, God-fearing andupright he was a friend and neighbor worth having. He was a son of Scotiaand was born in Caithnessshire in 1838. He came to Canada when a youngman of thirty-three with his wife and family of little ones in 1862. Hiswife was Margaret Manson, and for over forty years she was his faithfulhelpmeet and shared with him the hardships and struggles of pioneer dayswhen their farm was uncleared and little improved. Upon arrival in Canadaa few months were spent in Streetsville, but in 1873 Mr. Douglas came toEsquesing and worked for a number of years at Smith's Mills. The propertyon which the mills stood later came into his hands, and the finefarmestead, lot 18, con. 1, is the outcome. Mrs. Douglas passed away 13years ago. Alexandrina, Jessie, Bessie, William and James survive. MissBella Manson, a maiden sister of the mother, has been a valued friend andhelper in the home. Mr. Douglas had a serious illness nine years ago andfor the past five years has never had good health. Since June he hasgradually declined, but only for ten days prior to his death was heconfined to bed. He was a member of Knox Church and enjoyed its serviceswhen able to attend. He was also a member of Ivanhoe Camp, of the Sons ofScotland, and was the Camp's piper for many years. He loved the Scottishmusic and cheered many a Scottish heart with his playing of the pipes. The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon to Fairview Cemetery and wasattended by a large concourse of people. Rev. J. C. Wilson B.A.,officiated.
