    Surname: RIDDLE, BYNUM, BASS

Information transcribed from "The Southland" Vol. XII. No 1, Waco, Texas; Established March, 1892. Furnished by Sibyl Creasey.
Is one of the old landmarks, well known throughout the county and this section of Texas. The Riddles came from North Carolina, where Harmon Riddle, the grandfather of our subject, was born, who was a farmer, and also where Alexander Riddle, the father, was born; he was a farmer and a salesman. He came to Texas in 1847. He married a Bynum. She was born in South Carolina and married in 1820. They had ten children. Both he and his wife died in Cherokee county, in Texas, she July, 1850, he in 1856. B. P. Riddle himself was born January 25, 1829, in Jackson county, Alabama. He was educated in Talledega county; began farming in 1849, and had continued in that vocation ever since. He married Miss Mary A. Bass February 8, 1850. They have eight children, three girls and five boys, and have lost five children. He moved to Texas in 1847 from Talledga county, Alabama, and came from Cherokee county, Texas, to Van Zandt thirty-one years ago. Brother Riddle is a great Baptist, and has been one of those useful, active pillars of the church and society all these years. He engaged in the Confederate service and has in all these years and in many capacities been a soldier, and a heroic one at that. Acquired quite a little landed estate where he now lives, but has given his land to his children and used it in one benevolence or another, until it has been reduced to a good home on which he lives and where he enjoys life. He has the love and respect of probably as many people as any man who may be found in the county or section; he is honored and loved by all the people. He has lived in wisdon's ways, and his investments have been of that enduring kind, tableted on the hearts of the people, the fragrance of whose record will be enjoyed in the years to come.

Benjamin married Mary Ann Bass on 16 Feb 1850 in Cherokee Co., Texas, USA. Mary was born on 29 Mar 1835 in Talladega Co., Alabama; died on 15 Apr 1906 in Van Zandt Co., Texas; was buried in Cana Cemetery, Van Zandt Co., Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
