    "THE CRAWFORDSVILLE JOURNAL NEWSPAPER
    AUGUST 1904
    A BEAUTIFUL LIFE CLOSED
Mrs. Mabel Reynolds-French was born near Waveland May 28, 1881 anddied at the home of her father near Ladoga on August 10, 1904, agedtwenty-three years, two months and fourteen days. Her death came as agreat shock to the family, and numerous friends, and it is with afeeling of sadness and sorrow that we find we are compelled to recordher death, for we deeply deplore the loss of one so dear. Her demisewas wholly unexpected as she had improved rapidly for a week. Thefamily had not the least doubt of her recovery until a sudden relapsecame. After a few hours of intense suffering God whispered well donetou good and faithful servant and thus she fell asleep in Jesus havingher mind calm and composed until the last moment. She was the eldestdaughter of Lewis and Mary Reynolds and the devoted wife of ElmerFrench. To this union was born four boys, the oldest only about fouryears and two ten days old, for which the now angel mother sacrificedher life. Mabel, as her friends knew her, was naturally possessed ofa pleasant and cheerful disposition, always meeting her friends with asmile and jovial greeting, looking on th bright side of life at alltimes. She became a charter member of the Christian Church at Brown'sValley at its organization, entering immediately into the duties oflife in the church, and until recent years was ever at her post ofduty helping to advance the cause of Christ. In the Sunday school shewas always a willing worker, helping to make it a power for good andit is with sincere regret that one whose life was so pure and usefulas Mabels should be taken out of this great world where there is somuch need of the helpful and good. It is hard to see one so youngstricken down in the bright bloom of womanhood when life's morningseemed the fairest, but the all-wise Father, who alone can unveil thefuture knows best and we would say to the idolizing parents, husbandand two sisters that we know our feeble words of sympathy can renderbut little consolation and that nothing replace your loss. We extendour heartfelt sympathy in this dark hour of your life and pray thatGod will aid you and give you strength to endure the inevitable. There is one comforting thought to reflect upon that she lived in theatmosphere of heaven and its radiant beams of light were reflectedfrom her life int the pathway of many surely if all her friends couldcome and drop one single bud upon her grave, she would sleep beneath agreat avalanche of flowers. The funeral services were conducted byRev, W,H, Brown at the Christian church at Brown's Valley, whoofficiated at the wedding of the deceased but five years ago. Herwhite casket was ladened with flowers by loving hands. A largeconcourse of people were in attendance to pay their respects to onewho will be sadly missed. the interment was at Union near Waveland.
Gone was the life sustaining breath,
But oh, how beautiful was death,
    Mortality had passed away,
And there a sleeping angel lay.
    Mrs. N.R.
    Card of Thanks.
We desire to extend our heartfelt thanks to our many friends who sowillingly assisted and consoled us during the illness and death of ouraffectionate daughter and wife Mabel and may you all be blest withfriends so true should sickness and sorrow come to you.

Clans and Families of Ireland and Scotland
    X. The Vikings and Normans

The Vikings and Normans are ethnically linked because of their commondescent from the Norwegian group of Viking raiders and settlers of theninth to eleventh centuries. The Vikings per se came directly toIreland and Scotland during this period, and in Ireland theyestablished the first towns as coastal trading centers, as merchantactivity was a natural second stage to their original ferocious navalraiding. They became completely Gaelicized. The twelfth centurybrought Anglo-Norman settlers to Scotland, and Anglo-Norman invadersto Ireland. The Normans first appear as mixed Danish and Norwegiansettlers in tenth-century Normandy, a province of France which theseVikings wrested from the French and made a dukedom, and from whichprovince they subsequently invaded England in 1066. Their originalintroduction into the Frankish and Gallo-Roman world in Normandychanged military technology forever, for these acculturated Vikings, afterwards known as Normans, swept forward from Normandy into Englandand later Gaeldom with "Mote and Bailey" castles (where the Gaels hadraided, exacted tribute and then gone back to their own territory, theNormans confounded the Irish by actually squatting on the invaded landwith castles, thus physically denying it to its erstwhile owners). TheNormans also utilized disciplined and armored Frankish-style cavalry, thus introducing the mounted knight. They invaded both England andIreland with similar success, though in the Gaelic area they wereinfluenced as much as they influenced. They eventually became to avery large degree, "more Irish than the Irish," adopting Gaeliclifestyles, language and kinship patterns.
    The Norman Families

The Normans came to Ireland mostly from the Welsh Borders, in the wakeof the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1169. They came to Scotland asguest-settlers and allies to the Kings of Scots (who prized them fortheir chivalry and for their military and administrative skills)beginning with the reign of David I in the first half of the twelfthcentury (see Chapter IV). They included families of
Norman, Flemish, Welsh and Breton descent, the military aristocracy ofEngland at the time. When these invaders met the disarrayed charge ofthe native Gaelic warriors on the open plains of Ireland, they usuallyswept the Irish from the field with their awesome three-prongedattack: First the deadly flight of arrows from the distant andinvulnerable Welsh crossbowmen, then the organized charge of that "newanimal," the charger-mounted armored knights with their long swords, and finally the follow-through onslaught by unrelenting lines ofdisciplined Flemish infantry. Combine these demonstrations of bold, courageous and creative military innovation with the savvy, pragmaticyet treacherous political machinations of the Normans and their RoyalEnglish masters and you have the result: Within 80 years nearlythree-quarters of Ireland was under Norman control.

The Frenchs (de Freins). The ancestors of the Irish Frenchs were oneof the original Norman families in England, a branch of which settledin County Wexford about 1300. A branch of the Wexford family settledin Galway in the early fifteenth century, where they became one of themore prominent of the tribes of that city. Walter French becameSovereign (Mayor) of Galway in 1444.

My mother's (Joyce Lorraine Clore Elkins) research was exemplary andconcise. She knew many of the older family members as well in almosteveryone of the above families. Mother gathered source informationfrom those family members and then backed it up with biographies, obituaries, census records, marriage & death records, etc.... thesources are so multiple that I have not listed all of them in mynotes, but be assured there is a reference source somewhere amongstall of the many volumes of her work that I now own throughinheritance. I have endeavored over the last ten years to also updaterecords when time allows. When I do update, the sources are usuallyincluded in the notes of the person being updated in my Family TreeMaker program. The families are so multiple in origin with hundredsof branch families that putting all of the information into thecomputer has been a work in progress, and it continues even now. There are more than 12 books on the different families that I haveworked on so far already at the Crawfordsville Public Library.

The connection between the above families has been found. Pleasereview the register reports and follow the family lines for (1).Benjamin B. Labaw & Elizabeth Ann Smith, (2). Elizabeth Martin &Berryman Smith, and the couple (3). John Joseph Martin & MariaCatherine Otterbach. Elizabeth Ann Smith's grandmother is ElizabethMartin who is a direct descendant of John Joseph Martin from Muesen,Nassau - Siegen, Germany who settled in the first Germanna Colony ofFaquier County, Virginia in 1714. The family line has been tracedback to John Joseph Martin. A Michael Clore, a part of the Douglass/LaBaw descendants, or vice-versa (the families have extensivehistories of their own), is one of the first settlers to the samecolony in Faquier County, Virginia in 1717, just a few years later. These families are all related to each other through differentgenealogy lines. Conclusion: The families all had to have known eachother well for it was a very small community and they had all workedtogether and lived in the Fort together at Germanna, Virginia fornearly ten years until their passages to the new world were paid off.[SLJuhl, 30 Oct 2005]

"I just got back from Parke Co, and Montgomery Co. Some new info onthe Reynolds side, Mary Wright Reynold's was the daughter of James C.Wright and Caroline Hill Mullen. I went and found the info on James'death in Parke Co. I don't know if you need any of this, but I knowsince you have info on the Reynolds, you might want the Wrights.
    Death info:
James Crawford Wright died 9-1905 in Parke Co. IN (my records hadshown that he died in March)
birth: 12/22/1831 (I had him born in 1837 considering hisparents were married in 1836)
father: Dennis Wright born in KY
mother: L Crawford, born in IN
wife: Caroline Mullen ( she died before he did)
Cause of Death: Conclusion of the brain caused by a kick in the headby a horse hoof
    Buried: Waveland
Not sure what it meant by Waveland. I checked all the Montgomery Corecords, and also visited a cemetery in Waveland and couldn't findhim. I suspect he doesn't have a grave.
I also have an obit which I can scan and email to you. I also foundthat James' father, Dennis, owed 40 acres in Union Township, Parke Co.in 1832. And according to the obit, James had an Uncle James H.Wright who lived in the area and died a year before. I did find aJohn H Wright who died within the same year on the census's, not sureif it's the same person." [Transcribed 07 July 2008, SLJuhl,Compiler]

"I tracked CarolineHill Mullen Wright from Ohio with her family to herfirst marriage to a Mullen. She and Mullen went to Iowa, and he diedshortly there after. Her parents then came to Iowa, which is wherethey remained until their deaths. Caroline and James C. Wright weremarried like within a year of her first husband's death. I am notsure why James went to Iowa though." [Transcribed 09 July 2008,SLJuhl, Compiler]
