Index of first names

Washington Gideon Douglas

Among the wide-awake, earnest and active farmers we found in Van Zandt county we may easily name Mr. Gideon Douglas. He lives near Martins Mill, is running his plantation on a good scale, and wields quite an influence over the farm hands of the community. He is a grandson of Mathew Douglas, who lived in the State of Missouri, and who also was a farmer. Preston Douglas was a son of Mathew, and was reared on his father's farm in Missouri. However, he came to Texas before the war, and in due time he married Miss Adeline Dorcas Brown, who was born and reared in the State of Mississippi, but came to Texas early in life. Mr. And Mrs. Douglas were married in 1853, and became the parents of five children. Mr. Douglas died about the close of the Civil War, but Mrs. Douglas is still living. Gideon, the subject of this sketch, was born August 19, 1857, in Van Zandt county. He was reared on Van Zandt coil, went to her schools, has been identified with her interests, and is today a typical Van Zandter - and is proud of it.

He, like his father and grandfather were, is a farmer. He began it in 1890. He farms because he prefers it. He has been honored in this section by the preferment of neighbors. December 26, 1889, he married Miss Hattie Coaker, of Henderson county. They have ten children, and live happily in the general section of their birth and rearing. Mr. Douglas is a wide-awake citizen and active farmer, and takes a great interest in what will advance his county and section. He has 1000 acres of land, 400 of which is tenanted by colored people, in whom Mr. Douglas expresses much interest. He gives them all possible advantage, and is trying to elevate them in the better aspirations of life. All of our personal interviews with Mr. Douglas were of the most pleasant character, and we feel sure he is the kind of man to push anything to the front

Grandfather of Tony Douglas, country singer.
