Possibly composed in honour of Sholto John Douglas, 18th Earl of Morton (1818–1884). However, as it was composed in America, this may be fanciful thinking.

The melody was printed in Scotland by James S. Kerr in Merry Melodies, vol. 2 (c. 1880's) as "Morton's Hornpipe (2)."
