The Ewart Park sword

A bronze sword was discovered in December 1957 during road improvements on the Glasgow to Carlisle trunk route. Although there is no link to the Douglas family, it is referreed to as 'The Douglas Sword' in recognition of its location close to the village of Douglas.

This sword belongs to the native British family of leaf shaped swords, commonly called the Ewart Type., which appears among the 'highland Zone' of the British isles, dating from the Bronze Age, circa 7th - 8th century.

The sword, currently in the care of the Earl of Home, is 22½ inches long, but the tip is broken off. It has evidence of being repaired at least twice, so one can assume it was well used!

The sword was abandoned, broken across the line of the shoulders. If wielded by a Douglas, one hopes he lived to fight another day.
