Commander Hon. Dunbar Douglas was born on 9 July 1766. He was the son of Dunbar Douglas, 4th Earl of Selkirk and Helen Hamilton.

Dunbar Douglas was promoted Lieutenant in the Royal Navy on 15th November 1790.

He was Commanding Officer of HMS Terror in 1796/1797 being involved in the Capture of Trinidad

He gained the rank of Commander in the service of the Royal Navy.

He died on 29 October 1796 at age 30 at St. Christopher from yellow fever, on board ship.
