6th December 2008 Returning to someone I researched some time ago, I feel I am a little closer to identifying the Governor of Jersey  - a man who had not just a ship named after him, but a coin as well. Was Major General Sir Robert Percy Douglas, Lieutenant Governor of Jersey, also the 4th baronet of Carr? Can anyone help?
22nd November 2008 Trawling through Amazon for something, I came across a second-hand book on sale for just 4p. Douglas's tale of the Peninsular & Waterloo makes a good read (1st four pages, anyway!). A sergeant when he retired, he is clearly well educated with a good sense of humour.  I guess he needed it.
17th November 2008 The Douglas Archives now has in excess of 2000 files, and is fast out-growing this format.  The trouble is, that I do not have the time to re-organise the format into something that will work better.  Oh dear! What to do? I am also aware that I need to re-organise the genealogical database as well - not to mention irradicate more of those duplicate entries that creep in.
One thing I can do is build a better sitelog. This format is also out-growing the format.  I think I will use the MyBlogga.com service - it's free!
10th November 2008 Oh dear! If I thought the gap between March and may was a long time, what's this? But, dear reader, please don't think I have been idle during the intervening period - far from it. many pages have been added, or improved. many names have been added to the database as well. Contributions from around the world continue to make my life interesting - and challenging!  Keep them coming.
23rd May 2008 It seems like a long time - well it is! - since I last posted an update, but life has been going on in the Douglas Archives. We have been hacked again, and so, once more, I have had to replace the TNG software.  I am still working on Retrospect, the chosen replacement, so apologies for the lack of consistency.
I have also been revising the home page, to make it a bit more interesting.  I hope it works for you?
23rd March Happy Easter, everyone!
I was disappointed to see that there were no entries in the What's New  in the genealogy section.
And then realised that I have no uploaded any new data for a month!
I'll try to fix that this weekend!
14th March As if it is not confusing enough, I have added a new What's New? list. There is not much in it yet, because I have been diverted by other projects, and the Douglas Archives have had to be a lower priority. What's New? for the historical section is now here...>>> and
What's New in the genealogy section is here...>>>
14th March Thanks to Leigh Douglas, I have been able to tie up some loose ends, and reconcile entries in the genealogy section with biographies in the historical section. These are around Admiral Billy Douglas.  It would be good to get a fuller biography of him.  He sounds as though he might have had an interesting life.
The other admiral I have been researching is Archibald Douglas, who helped set up the Japanese navy. I have still to write this up.
19th February Oh dear!  I have been remiss about keeping this entry up to date - and there has been lots of activity. Most recently, I have been working on occupants of the poorhouses, as recorded in census records of 1881. I came upon this via a story of George Edward Douglas, who was mster of Marylebone Poorhouse, and then found any records of unfortunates who found themselves fallen on hard times.
24th January 2008 A couple of interesting stories came to light during the work I have been doing in the past week. One was about Alexander Douglas, a soldier captured at the battle of Dunbar. He was lucky to survived being held prisoner - many of his compatriots died of starvation when their gaolers stole and sold their food. He was then shipped off to Virginia. The other story was about Hugh Douglas of Longniddry, who employed john Knox as tutor to his sons. I had not come across this familly before, and am now looking for more about them
23rd January 2008 I have been working away updating pages, amking corrections and researching new material. Didn't think much of it til I realised that I have just uploaded 40 pages.
5th January 2008 There have been some interesting developments in the Douglas DNA research project, and I have incorporated some of these here. One development has been disproving the ancestry of Domini Douglas. It now seems unlikely he was a son of the 13th earl of Morton. See the DNA section for further details of results to date.  There has also been correspondence about Douglas links with the West Indies, which is throwing up some useful new knowledge.
6th January 2008 I have been updating various historical records and biographies, and also developing further trees in the genalogy section.. See the barons of Mordington.  I have not yet uploaded a GEDCOM, which will add hundreds of new names into the database as I still have some work to do in this area.
