    C. Andreas WAS born sometime in 1721 in Ludwigsburg, Wurrtemburg, Germany. He immigrated to Pennsylvania in his 17th year on the ship "Nancy", and was listed as Andreas Ringer. William Wallace was listed as master of ship ('Pennsylvania GermanPioneers' by Strassburger and Hinkle, pg. 227 references PA ArchivesSecond Series, Vol XVII, p. 165). He settled in Bucks County where he purchased 50 acres of land in 1746 (Listed as Andreas Ringle - warrantees of Land, 50 acres, June 5, 1746,from Pennsylvania Archives A39P, Ser. 3, Vol. 24, Pg. 158.). First wife, Anna Elizabeth Ahlgeyer, 1709-1747, was born in Hanover, Germany (possibly died in childbirth). They had 3 children,including Mathias Ringle (1742-1811) who was a wagonmaker for Geo. Washington during the Revolutionary War. Had 4 children with 2nd wife, Anna Catherine (?). Andreas died of a burning fever in 1769. It is believed all of the children of this marriage preceded him in death. He was of the reformed faith and the baptismal and death records are in Philadelphia and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, churches.

Mathias Ringle of HempfieldTownship in the county of Westmoreland and state of Pennsylvania,being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks begiven unto God . Secondly, it is my desire that all my just debts befully and completely paid together with my funeral expenses. Thirdly,I give & bequeath to Julianna my dearly beloved wife the third part ofall my property if she continues a widow or otherwise as long as shebears my name. Fourthly, it is my will that John and Stophel Ringle mytwo sons take into their possession my place adjoining theKiscominitas in Westmorland County of Pennsylvania afore said and shemy dearly beloved wife Julianna dwell be and abide them during hernatural life if she remains a widow . . .     "Mathias enlisted as Ensign in the Continental Army and served underGeorge Washington in the winter at Valley Forge and in the marchacrossthe Deleware. Then he bought land in Westmoreland Co, PA. Againenlisting as a Private in the Revolutionary War, he served until theend of the war.
    Mathias built a large brick home in 1797, located just oppositethe"Way Station" at McDowell's Crossroads, in Madison, PA? Thebuilding dates back to about 1810. (In the story caption under apencil sketch of the house, his name is spelled "Mathias Reingle)Apparently, his house has been remodeled into an apartment complex.He was a blacksmith and wagon maker."
    Stone at Yockey meetinghouse (St. James Church Cemetery) reads:ENSIGN1st BTN. NORTHAMPTON CO. MILITIA REVOLUTIONARY WAR - WAGONMAKER WITHGENERAL WASHINGTON AT VALLEY FORGE 1776-1783.
    The children except for Eve and Stophel, who both died young, eithersettled in Western PA, Northwestern OH and Northeastern OH.
    The 1790 census lista Mathias family as 3 males over 16 yrs, 3malesunder 16 yrs, and 5 females in household.

    ..."The paternal grandfather was Mathias Ringle and he too was born inPennsylvania when it was still numbered among the colonial possessionsof Great Britain. When the yoke of British oppression becameintolerable and the colonists made the attempt to sever all allegiancewith the crown he was in hearty sympathy with the movement and servedfor eight years in the army which won American independence. He waswith Washington during the memorable winter at Valley Forge where theAmerican troops underwent untold hardships and he participated in manyof the long campaigns and hotly contested battles of the war. He wasof German descent and died in Pennsylvania when well advanced inyears. The maternal grandfather of our subject passed away in theKeystone state at the advanced age of ninety-two years after devotinghis active life to farming."     "Joseph Ringle, the father of John Ringle, was a coal miner and owneda number of teams, hauling coal into Pittsburg. Having determined toestablish his home in this state (IL.), He first sent his son James toHenry County with four horses and a wagon and in the Spring of 1857came here with the other members of the family. They took up theirabode on a rented farm in Munson township and later the fatherpurchased a tract of one hundred and sixty acres in Osco township,where he reared his children. During the fifteen years of his life helived retired in Cambridge, having won a comfortable competencethrough the careful conduct of his agricultural interests. Hisdemise, which occurred at the home of his son William in Oscotownship, was the occasion of deep and widespread regret. His wife,who survived him, was called to her final rest on the 3d of December,1898, when eighty-four years of age. They were both devoted andfaithful members of the Presbyterian church. Their union was blessedwith nine children, seven of whom still survive, namely: James; John,of this review; Catharine, the widow of Harrison Moore, of Newton,Iowa; William, a resident of Cambridge; Louisa, the widow of A.J.Combs, of Cambridge; Mary, the widow of J.C.     "James Ringle, of Munson Township, removed to Henry county in 1856.He was born in Westmoreland Co., Pa., April 3, 1837, and is the son ofJoseph and Mary A. (Whitesel) Ringle. The personal account of theparents is given on other pages of this work. The maternalgrandparents of Mr. Ringle were natives of Holland. His grandfatherRingle was a soldier in the War of the Revolution, and after the warwas ended settled in Pennsylvania. Mr. Ringle passed the years of hisyouth and minority in the county where he was born, and remained thereuntil he came to Illinois. He was 19 when he set out from his homewith four horses and a wagon to make an overland trip to Henry County. He passed 30 days on the road, and spent the first winter in thefamily of the Rev. Mr. Leavenworth. In the following Spring theparents followed the son to Henry County. The father bought a farm inwhat is now the township of Osco, which was situated on section 14.That township was then known as "16." It was all in its primalcondition of unbroken prairie. The senior Ringle was the residentowner of the place seven years, and at the end of that time removed toCambridge. Mr Ringle is the oldest son, and he remained with hisparents until he became the head of a family of his own. His marriageto Miss Caroline Lamprey took place July 22, 1862. Mrs. Ringle is thedaughter of Eli and Hannah (Sanborn) Lamprey, and was born inRockingham Co., N.H. After their marriage they passed a year and ahalf on the homestead, and in 1864 Mr. Ringle bought 80 acres of landon section 18, in Munson Township. He erected farm buildings and wasthe occupant of the place until 1868, when he sold it and bought 164acres on section 7, and has since lived on the place. the farm is avaluable one, and supplied with modern fixtures of the most approvedstyle.     JOHN RINGLE, who since March, 1900, has lived retired in Cambridge,was for many years actively and successfully identified with theagricultural interests of Henry County. His birth occurred inMinersville, Pennsylvania, on the 21st of May, 1841, his parents beingJoseph and Mary Ann (Whitesell) Ringle, likewise natives of theKeystone state. The paternal grandfather, Mathias Ringle, was aRevolutionary soldier and took up his abode in Westmoreland county,Pennsylvania, where his son Joseph was born. The mother of JosephRingle bore the name of Mary Ann Clawson and lived to an advanced age. Mathias Ringle, who was twice married and reared a family oftwenty-one children, passed away when sixty-seven years of age.Jonathan Whitesell, the maternal grandfather of our subject, was anative of Pennsylvania and followed general agricultural pursuitsthroughout his active business career. He and his wife died in thatstate when well advanced in years. They had five children. (Paragraphon Joseph Ringle is in his notes.) ..........
    John Ringle, who obtained his education in the district schools, was alad of sixteen years when he came with his parents to Henry County,Illinois, and grew to manhood on his father's farm in Osco township.On the 10th of September, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company C,Ninth Illinois Cavalry, with which he served for a little more thanthree years. He participated in the battles of Tupelo, Franklin andNashville and also took part in numerous skirmishes, ever proving amost brave and loyal soldier. When hostilities had ceased he returnedto Henry County and engaged in farming for two years, on theexpiration of which period he removed to Caldwell County, Missouri,where he was identified with agricultural pursuits for four years. Atthe end of that time he returned to Henry County and purchased apartly improved farm of one hundred and fifty acres in Osco Township,on which he made his home until the Spring of 1883. After disposingof that property he bought a tract of land of one hundred andseventeen acres lying a mile North of Cambridge and successfullycontinued its cultivation and improvement until March, 1900, when hetook up his abode in Cambridge, where he has since lived retired inthe enjoyment of the fruits of his former toil.
    On the 28th of February, 1867, Mr. Ringle was joined in wedlock toMiss Mary Humphrey, who was born in New York City on the 31st ofMarch, 1844, her parents being Nicholas and Sophia (Van Allan)Humphrey, both natives of Canada. The father was of French parentageand the mother came of German lineage. Of their family of tenchildren, seven lived to attain years of maturity and two stillsurvive, namely: Mrs. J.M. Loomis, of Missouri; and Mrs. John Ringle. Nicholas Humphrey passed away in New York City in 1862, at thevenerable age of ninety-eight years, and the demise of his wifeoccurred in the year 1847. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Ringle have been bornthree daughters, as follows: Annie L., who is now the wife of DanielConneghy, by whom she has three children--Ora, Clayton and Lela; IdaA., who is the wife of Charles C. Curtis and has four children--Delia,Mabel, John and Chester; and Kate L., who gave her hand in marriage toThomas M. Neville and has two children--Gladys and Mildred.
    Politically Mr. Ringle is a stalwart advocate of the republican party. He still maintains pleasant relations with his old army comradesthrough his membership in the G.A.R., and while in the servicebelonged to the Union League. His wife is a faithful and exemplarymember of the Congregational church.     Aged Cambridge Woman Dies In Rapp Home; Member of Pioneer Family.
    Geneseo, Jan 18, -- Mrs. Louise Combs, one of the few Cambridgematriarchs who had reached and passed their 90th year, died at 10 thismorning in the home of Mrs. Sam Rapp of Geneseo. She was 94 yearsold. The body was taken to Myers' Funeral Chapel, where funeralarrangements are incomplete. Mrs. Combs, for ninety-one years aresident of Henry County, became ill of pneumonia last spring and wastaken to the Geneseo hospital. She was later taken to the Rapp homehere, where she had been cared for during the last eight months.Prior to entering the hospital, Mrs. Combs had been residing with hersons in Geneseo, Cambridge and Galva. Mrs. Combs was born nearPittsburgh, Pa., on Oct. 11, 1845, the daughter of Joseph and MarianneRingle. When she was 3 years old, her family migrated to Henry Countyand settled in Munson Township, later purchasing land in OscoTownship. On May 23, 1867, she was married to Andrew Combs. Thecouple operated a farm near Osco until Mr. Combs' death in 1897. Mrs.Combs then moved to Cambridge and lived in a house she owned on WestLocust Street for several years. Survivors are three sons, Henry ofGeneseo, Ed of Cambridge and Joseph of Galva, one brother WilliamRingle of Pasadena, Cal., former Cambridge business man; severalgrandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. three brothers and asister preceded her in death."     "For fifty-two years William Ringle has lived in Henry county and,retiring from agricultural life, took up his abode in Cambridge wherehe is now the senior member of the firm of William Ringle & Company,grain buyers and owners of an elevator. He is also the vice presidentof the First National Bank and is widely recognized as a man ofaffairs who wields a wide influence. His birth occurred in Alleghenycounty, Pennsylvania, March 6, 1847, his parents being Joseph and Mary(Whitesell) Ringle, who were also natives of the Keystone state." ... He attended thedistrict schools and the Orion Prairie Home Academy, while hisbusiness training was received under the direction of his father whoassigned to him such farm duties as his age and strength permitted.He resolved to make his life work the occupation to which he had beenreared and with one horse he started out for himself on a tract ofrented land. For several years he continued to cultivate farms whichhe leased but during that period carefully saved all that he madeabove necessary expenses and eventually was enabled to purchase onehundred and sixty acres of land in Osco township. He still owns thatproperty and had made other investments until his possessions in thiscounty aggregate three hundred and twenty acres. While in Grantcounty, Minnesota, he owns six hundred and forty acres. He continuedto reside on his farm in Osco township until the Spring of 1909, whenhe removed to Cambridge. He is now the senior partner of the firm ofWilliam Ringle & Company, owners of a large elevator and conducting anextensive business in grain. He also has voice management of theFirst National Bank at Cambridge, being its vice president.
    On the 23rd of October, 1873, Mr. Ringle was married to Miss Ellen E.Welton, whose birth occurred near Henry, Illinois. Her parents,Lester C. and Ora (Welton) Welton were natives of Connecticut and,coming to Henry county at an early day, settled near Osco. Her fatherwas one of the foremost men of the township in pioneer times and tookan important part in shaping its policy and promoting its growth.Both he and his wife died in Hutchinson, Kansas, and were laid to restin the cemetery there. Their family numbered two sons and twodaughters: James, Merritt, Helen and Margaret.
    In his political views William Ringle is a republican and for severalterms served as supervisor and other township offices. No trustreposed in him has ever been betrayed in the slightest degree. Mrs.Ringle is a member of the Episcopal church while Mr. Ringle is amember of the Presbyterian church. Mr. Ringle is well known as a manof integrity, of business ability, of keen insight and of publicspirit so that his words carry weight in matters of vital importanceto the community and he is widely recognized as a most influential andprogressive citizen."
