- ELIAS BALL (1676?-1751). Father of John Coming Ball; grandfather of Henry
Laurens (1763-1821) and John Laurens; father-in-law of John Ashby
(1698-1729), George Austin, Philip Dawes, Henry Laurens (1724-1792), and
John Vicaridge.
Elias Ball was born in the parish of Stockentine, Devonshire, the second
son of William Ball, a farmer. About 1698 he immigrated to South
Carolina, where his father's half-brother, John Coming, had already
settled. He inherited Comingtee at the 'tee' of the Cooper River from
John Coming's widow, Affra. In 1701 he married Elizabeth Harleston who
was a relative of his aunt, Affra Coming. They had many children, but
only four survived childhood: Anne (m. 1st Philip Dawes. 2nd George
Austin), Elias, Elizabeth (m. 1st John Ashby, 2nd John Vicaridge, 3rd
Richard Shubrick), and John Coming. Elizabeth Harleston Ball died in
1720, and within eleven months, much to the consternation of his first
wife's family, Elias Ball remarried. His second wife was Mary Delamere, a
girl no older than his eldest daughter. Their union produced seven
offspring, but only Eleanor (m. Henry Laurens) reached adulthood..
