HARVEY BREWER, a prominent druggist of Greenwood, was born on a farmupon
which is built the town of Greenwood, April 19, 1844. He was the sonof
Abram V. and Delilah (Rice) Brewer, both of whom were natives ofMercer
County, Ky., of German descent. They were reared and married in theirnative county, and came to Johnson County, and located on a tract ofland where Greenwood now stands, in an early day. His boyhood wasspent on the old homestead, and at fifteen years of age he enteredDepauw University, where he attended two years. He then returned homeand remained until he attained the age of twenty-two. At this age hestarted out into the world to do for himself. Making his way toTopeka, Kan., he there clerked in a drug store two years. He thenreturned to this county, and on the 7th day of October, 1869, he wasmarried to Alice Polk, daughter of George W. and Mary (Embree)Polk,whose history is given elsewhere. In 1872, he became the proprietorof a drug store in that place, to which his attention has since beendirected. He has enjoyed a good trade and one that has enabled him toaccumulate considerable property. He has also dealt in money more orless. Besides his brick business block and elegant residence inGreenwood, he owns three farms which comprise a total acreage of 235acres. The wife of Mr. brewer, died May 1, 1886, leaving fourchildren: Fred C., Maude F., Mamie A. and Alma M., all of whom areliving. Mr. Brewer is a member of the Presbyterian Church,and of theMasonic fraternity, having reached the thirty-second degree. Inpolitics, he is an ardent republican.
