- EXCERPT: "John Graves (1765-1830), son of John Graves of FrederickCounty, Virginia, married Mary Lester in 1797. He owned slaves inVirginia but had conscientious scruples against slavery and tried tofree them in 1810. Virginia law held those freeing slaves financiallyresponsible for their ex-slaves for some years.
