- (Research):This generation?
Hugh Wallace matriculated at the University in 1774. He was born in Jamaica, the first son of Hugh of Eldersley, in Jamaica.
The Wallace's were a prominent Scottish slave-owning family, who owned estates and enslaved people in Jamaica over successive generations. Wallace acquired the estate of Biscany, in Jamaica, and became a merchant and an army officer.
Five of his sons would go on to attend the University of Glasgow between 1802 and 1812. Hugh Ritchie Wallace was the first to attend, illustrating Old College's role as a home for the sons of the Scottish 'plantocracy'.
