1823 (Wright's History): "On the east side of the north transept, a stone slab, beneath a canopy, enveloped in mantling '97 H. S. E. GULIELMUS JOHNSTON ?" Perhaps it was moved when the second, lower inscription was added c1861?
1899 guidebook has photo showing the plaque fixed to the wall closing the arch which now leads to the nave north aisle; plaque moved when wall taken down for building of nave in 1908; part of it shown in postcard lying near NW corner of N Transept before its re-fixing.

Elizabethh Douglas was probably the great-great-great-granddaughter of William Johnson.
"In memory of Elizabeth the beloved daughter of James DOUGLAS of 189 Oxford St. London who d. at Hexham 8 Nov. 1861 aged 28 yrs. Also of Jane, wife of the above James DOUGLAS, who d. 7 June 1863 at Kilshane, Tipperary, Ireland, aged 63 yrs. 'Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest'." [Inscription at Cemetery 30/60]
