- Every generation, and set of brothers, seems to include Anthony and William, and sometimes Henry. The folowing may refer to another William Symmer
A Bristol merchant and member of the slave trade,
William, who was based in Bristol, was in business with his brother Anthony. They were trading in sugar (produced on the slave plantations) and also in enslaved Africans. This was in the 1680s, when the London-based Royal African Company had control of slave trading. The Swymmers were thus probably trading illegally, although it is possible they were buying slaves themselves from the Royal African Company and simply selling them on.
In Janauary 1687, King James displaced William Symmer, and other, from Bristol Corporation, though they were reinsted the folowing year.
His brother?? Anthony Swymmer of Clarendon, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1730
- (Research):Possibly born 1682 in Bristol, Gloucester, England
Possibly married to Mary Anne Lane, born abt 1684 who died in 1708
in his Will of 1726 (?this) William Swymmer of Bristol left a legacy of ?100 to another William Swymmer, the son of John Swymmer of Padstow.
