- He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.
A Captain in the service of the Tank Corps, he fought in the First World War.In 1924, He was a Lt Col in the 11th Hussars.He was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of Australia between 1929 and 1930.
He also fought in the Second World War, he was commander of the Southern Rhodesia Armoured Car Regiment.
He held the office of High Sheriff of County Down in 1944, Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of County Down in 1946 and High Sheriff of County Tyrone in 1954.
He lived at Beltrim Castle, Gortin, County Tyrone, Ireland.
