G.W. WALTER (George Worley Walter)
G. W. Walter, farmer and merchant, was born in Washington County, onhis present farm, November 15, 1844, the son of John and Margaret(Kyker) Walter, the former born in Washington County, Tenn., in 1800,the son of Peter Walter, a native of Washington County. Peter was theson of English parents. The father died in 1862, and the mother, bornin 1802, died in 1864. She was a devoted Christian of the Methodistfaith, while her husband was a Lutheran. Our subject had theadvantages of country home and school life, and has devoted himself tofarming and merchandising. He is a self-made man and has beengenerally successful. In 1866 he married Rebecca J., a daughter ofThomas Ellis, of Greene County, and their children are Catherine L.and William S. The mother died in 1871. Our subject then marriedManda, a daughter of Jackson and Lucinda Broyles. Their children areDaniel A., Dorotha A., Marion R., Isaac P., Virgie E., Leona M. andMary E. He and his wife are members of the Cumberland PresbyterianChurch. In 1862 he enlisted in Company G, Fourth Tennessee Infantry,United States Army, and served at McMinnville (skirmish) where hiscompanay was captured by Wheeler's brigade, and was also in the PaintRock campaign. He was mustered out as sergeant. He has since been amerchant and farmer, and is also postmaster at Pilot Hill.

Note how George's name was spelled. The only way the family was foundin the census was by using Virgie's name. The 1900 Federal CensusRecord states that George & Amanda had eight children and eightchildren were still living at that time. Leona is not listed with thefamily in the 1900 census nor in the 1910 census.
