- Cornelius was a brother to Martha Duree Elkins and brother-n-law toWilliam H. Elkins. He was born in 1842, and died in 1871 inBridgeton, Parke County, Indiana. He did marry, but became a widowerjust three months later. He never remarried, and had no children. Hejoined the Regular Army in the Civil War Between The States, and wasin the Thirteenth Indiana Infantry, the Fourth United StatesArtillary, and had the rank of Quartermaster-Sergeant. Cornelius waspresent at the fall of Richmond. His health being delicate, he wasobliged to retire from the Army after three years spent in regularservice, with eight years total service in all. In 1871, while atBridgeton, he seized with heart failure on the banks of the BigRaccoon, into which he fell and was drowned.

"CORNELIUS S. DUREE"
"... Cornelius S. enlisted during the late war as a member of theThirteenth Indiana Infantry, in response to the first call ofPresident Lincoln for seventy-five thousand volunteers. Soonafterward he joined the Fourth United Artillery and served until theclose of the war, participating in many of the leading battles of thatgreat conflict, and being present at the fall of Richmond. At theclose of the war he joined the regular army and served asQuartermaster-Sergeant. His health being delicate, he obliged toretire from the army after three years spent in regular service, eightyears in all. In 1871, while at Bridgeton, he seized with heartfailure on the banks of the Big Raccoon, into which he fell and wasdrowned. He had been married, but his wife died three months aftertheir union."
