- PLEASE NOTE: HIS Given NAME HAS BEEN SPELLED SEVERAL DIFFERENT WAYSIN MULTIPLE DOCUMENTS--Greenbery, Greenberry, GreenBeary, Greenbury,but his Christian name of Hatfield and surname of Blackson have not.On his death certificate his place of birth is given as MuskingumCounty, OH., but on his military pension papers his place of birth isgiven as Harrison County, OH. It was also noted that Clay County, OH.was also given on another document. There is not a Clay County, Ohio,but there is a Clay City. Dated Apr. 2, 1915--Greenbeary claimed inhis pension papers that he was born in Gernsy Co. Ohio, and married 24May 1864 in Harrison Township, Muskingum County, Ohio (He signed hisname Greenbeary H. Blackson.). Greenbeary & Barbara's birth dates aregiven along with all of the children, plus birth dates are given alongwith some of the death dates. (The information was quoted as comingfrom a Family Bible.).

"hello, my gr grandfather is the line from GBH Greenberry HatfieldBlackson son of Elizabeth Hatfield Hamler Blackson and MichaelBlackson. I cannot help on the Hamler side because I cannot get a leadon Michael, some of the relatives stated Michael may have been hismiddle name for instance. He was born in Maryland. John Allen was hisoldest brother and Benjamin Franklin was his twin. All were members ofthe Oddfellows. We have often wondered how Elizabeth was related tothe Hatfields? "DEATH OF G.H. BLACKSON
Death came as a relief to G.H. Blackson at the family home in Goff atfive o'clock last Sunday morning. His death marks the close of a lifeof more than three quarters of a century. Mr. Blackson has been asufferer for many years of ailments that would have overcome men ofless grit and determination.
Greenberry Hatfield Blackson was born July 30, 1841, in Clay County,Ohio, and died at his home in Goff, Kansas, July 7, 1918, at the ageof nearly 76 years. His boyhood days were spent in his native stateand it was there he married on May 23, 1863 to Miss Barbara AnnSmallwood in Muskingum County. The following Spring Mr. Blacksonenlisted in the 9th Ohio Cavalry and served in the union army untilthe close of the Civil War. After the close of the war he worked inthe coal mines for a number of years. In 1885 with the wife andchildren he came to Kansas and located on a farm near Sabetha, a fewyears later to Goff. He spent one year working on the railroad andthe balance of the time has farmed in this community until he moved toGoff twenty-three years ago.
Besides the aged wife, the following children are living: John F.,who has made his home with the parents the past year; Add E. Tharpe ofNewark, Okla.; Charles of Santoy, Ohio; Lewis H. Blackson, who hasbeen in the U.S. Army for several years. The deceased children are adaughter, Mary, who died at two years of age; Wm. T., who died August14, 1907; Albert, August 20, 1905; and Maggie D. Kachelimuer (?sp),who died March 10, 1911.
Funeral services will be held (Thursday) afternoon at 2:30 from theChristian Church in Goff. Rev. George Howard will deliver the sermon. Interment will be in Fairview." [Transcribed 18 February 2008,SLJuhl, compiler]

NOTE: It appears from the records that Barbary/Barbara Blackson hadassumed her husband to be wounded and killed in the war aroundNashville, Tennessee in November 20, 1864. There are pensionapplication records attesting to this belief; However, there is also abrief letter from her in 1865 to a Mr. Goff explaining that she hadjust heard that her husband was alive, but had been captured and inprison for four months. She had received a letter from him and thathe was expected to "come home", signed "from B.A. Blackson". WhenGreenbeary was 50 years old, he applied for disability benefits, andin 10th December 1918, Barbara again applied for the widows pensionafter his death.

Not borne on rolls ofany Co. and the rolls on file for that period do not show him absent.The medical records show him treated as follows: Mch. 25 to April 2,'65 Chronic Diarrhrea; April 1 to 7, '65 Ch. Diarrhrea; April 8 to20, '65, Convalescent Furloughed April 20, '65. No additional recordof disability found. Adjutant General F.C. Ainsworth, Washington,D.C., Aug. 16, 1911 (Commisioner of Pensions) etc..." Excerpts fromletter dated 31 October 1891, "...That he enlisted 3, Oct 1864 atNewark Ohio in Co. "A" 9th O. Vol. Cav. Capt. Macomber and wasdischarged at Columbus Ohio May 1865 where he returned from ____? Missvia Vicksburg Miss & Jefferson Barracks Mo. and he was captured atNashville Tenn..."; Medical Exam--Claimant's statement--" ...8 monthsservice. Seven been well since war. In prison 4 months In the Hospitalat vicksburg, on way from prison, also at Jefferson Barracks Mo.before he reached home. Diarrhea once a month lasting 2 weeks. Bowelsmove about 15 times a day. Pain in lower abdomen where diarrhea ispresent and in rectum when bowels move. Pneumonia when in prison &lungs been weak since. Vertigo several years where fatiqued. Headswims. Has it in bed if tired. Incontinence of urine at night. Diseasof eyes 15 yrs. Reads with glasses--age 50 years. Body Emaciated andstooping. skin Tawny and Shrivelled, etc... Personally came before me, a NotaryPublic in and for the aforesaid County and State, John F. Blackson,aged 54 years, citizens of the town of Goff, County of Nemaha, Stateof Kansas well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit,and who, being duly sworn, declare in relation to aforesaid case, asfollows:
"I am a son of the soldier and widow and lived with them until I was20 yrs old. Then I came to Kansas, One year later they came to Kansasalso, I then made My home with them again, And after I was married Ilived near them for several years, and then I moved to California,always receiving letters from them, and so far as I know of My ownKnowledge and what I learned By letter after going to California, theylived together as Man and wife, I moved from California to Goff oneyear ago and was at home with them when Father died.
