Agriculture in Union Township, Montgomery County, has an able exponentin the person of James Wright, another of our worthy native sons and aman who has done not a little to encourage a better grade of farmingand stock raising in his community and also a better code of civic andmoral life, for he is a man who has always believed in progress andhas, while laboring for his individual advancement, sought to promotethe general public good. Such men are to be commended in any communityand they are always worthy of attention in any work of the provinceassigned to the one in hand. Mr. Wright was born in Scott Township,Montgomery County, Indiana, June 26, 1848. He is a son of John andJulia Ann (McCoy) Wright. The farmer was born in North Carolina, wherehe spent his earlier years and from which state he made the longoverland journey to Montgomery County, Indiana in 1830, and settled inClark Township, among the pioneers; there he worked hard to establisha home. After remaining there some time he removed to Scott Township,where he developed a good farm on which he spent the rest of his life,dying there many years ago. The family consisted of 8 children: Lucy;Mary Ann (deceased); Thomas W; James of this sketch; John M; Samuel A;William (deceased); and Albert (deceased). James Wright grew tomanhood on the home farm and there assisted his father with thegeneral work during the crop seasons and in the winter time heattended the district schools, then took up farming for himself atwhich he has remained active to the present time with ever increasingsuccess. He has not specialized on anything, carrying on general andmixed farming. He has a farm of 52 acres and has kept his place wellimproved and under a high state of cultivation, and he has a goodgrade of live stock and pleasant home and substantial outbuildings.Mr. Wright was married on Jan 11, 1877 to Eliza Corn, daughter ofHobert and Rachel (Randall) Corn, both native of Kentucky, from whichstate they both came to Indiana with their parents when they wereyoung. These families settled in Brown Township, Montgomery Countywhere they established permanent homes, and there the parents of Mrs.Wright spent the rest of their lives, engaged in general farming. Ninechildren were born to them: namely: Margaret and Joseph, deceased;Mary; Nancy; Asa; Eliza; who married Mr. Wright; George; Susan; Evaand James. Five children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Wright, namedas follows: William, lives in New Market; Stella and Harley, deceased;John E lives in Crawfordsville; Ora married Dr. VanCleave and theylive in Crissman, Illinois. Politically, Mr. Wright is a Republican,but he has never sought or held office. Fraternally, he belongs to theknights of Pythias at New Market, and he is a member of the MethodistChurch.?
