Notes |
- Remained in Hinxton Union Workhouse until old enough to join the Royal Navy,
aged 12. In the 1851 Census, Joseph Douglass was registered as a pauper;
worked as a scholar and lived in Linton Union Workhouse, Linton, Linton, Cambridge.
"...May have been either: in the 1861 census returns theres a joseph aged
25, able bodied seaman born saffron walden ( which hinxton is part of) on
board royal navy vessel the VIXEN at sea of the coast of Spain. then in 1871.
I have 2 Joseph (Douglas)s on the census returns,
1: aged 34 petty officer, born
saffron walden , married to sarah and at the time of the census was living in
hampshire.
2: the other joseph was also 34 a gunners mate born saffron walden
on board H.M.S.EXCELLENT at porstmouth hamshire...."

I believe these are the same man, and have entered his details as such. HMS
EXCELLENT is synonymous with Whale Island, Portsmouth - gunnery school. Bob
