- Colonel Alexander Charles Hamilton, 10th Lord Belhaven and Stenton gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the Royal Engineers.
He fought in the Zulu War in 1879.3 He was Brigadier of the Surrey Volunteer Infantry Brigade between 1888 and 1902.5 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.).
He succeeded to the title of 10th Lord Belhaven and Stenton, co. Haddington [S., 1647] on 6 September 1893
In July 1894 his title of Lord Belhaven and Stenton was confirmed in his favour by the House of Lords.
He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lanarkshire. He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Lanarkshire. He held the office of Representative Peer (Liberal Unionist) [Scotland] in 1900.
He was decorated with the award of Territorial Decoration (T.D.).
