  • Notes
    • a native of Aberdeen stock.

Lawyer and civil servant, he held the office of Clerk of Court Martial and Councils of War in Scotland and, notably, was particularly active during 1714– 16 when serving the 2nd Duke of Argyll, commander-in-chief of all armed forces in 'North Britain', in his campaign against the 1715 Jacobite rebellion.

He left his widow sufficient income and property to bring up his two sons frugally, both sickly children, in a will he drew up on 13 November 17229 (did he know he was dying?). When Hugh died, Adam inherited their father's state.
