One source states that there "were.....children by the third wife, who settled in the north-west of Ireland." The foregoing statement also lends credence to the statement in the data gathered by the late Hon. George Green Mathews of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida who stated that John Mathews of Augusta County, Virginia, who married Ann Archer, was an Irish immigrant and was a grandson of Theobald Mathew. Thus far it has not been possible to determine from whence came this information and what were the names of all of the above Theobald's children. The other sources used in addition to the one cited above, are in substantial agreement, although not as complete as to the children of Theobald Mathew, Esq. The names of four of Theobald's children by his third wife were obtained from pedigrees on file in the office of the Deputy Record Keeper, Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. The will of Theobald Mathew indicates that he had five children by his third wife:
"Abstracts of Prerogative Wills
Theobald Mathews, Annfield, co. Tipperary, 1703
Ref. T681
"I Theobald Mathews heretofore of Anfield Co Tipperary in ye Kingdom of Ireland but now of ye Parish of St. James Westminster in the County of Middlesex, Esq.
"Whereas I have settled and bestowed several partes of my estate upon my children by my 1st and 2 wives to the utmost I have been able to doe reserving very little for my own subsistence and whereas by reason of ye late warrs and troubles in Ireland I have for several years past been kept out of the possession of the lands reserved to myself there and hade soe little of the roots thereof that I am likely to leave my now wife and 5 children by her unprovided for! Now to the end that that lieele I have left may be the better secured..... for their use I doe hereby give and berqueath unto my brother Henry Nevill of Hold in the Co. of Leicester Esq. all my arrears of rents that shall be due at my death..... bills, bonds foods, chattles, leases etc., and all my estate reall and personall which I have in my power to dispose of and do also, constitute the said Henry Nevill Sole Exor. this my last will.
"Will signed 1695-6."
The Will of Catherine Mathew, widow of Theobald is exasperatingly brief:
"Abstract of Prerogative Will
Catherine Mathew, Dublin, widow, 1742
"I Catherine Mathew of the Citty of Dublin widow and relict of Theobald Mathew Esq. deceased.....
"I bequeath:-
"to my eldest son Theobald Mathew 10 pounds and no more. to my younger son Peter Nevil Mathew 10 pounds and no more. all remainder to my two daughters Mary and Catherine Mathew share and share alike.
"Executrixes:- daughters Mary and Catherine Mathew.
"Will signed 11 March 1741
"Witnesses:- Thos. Dillon; Michael Usher; Adam de Glatigny. Notary Public.
"Probate to Executrixes 7 July 1742."
One cannot help but wonder why the fifth child was not mentioned in her will; was it because he was deceased? Or perhaps had emigrated from the country?
