Notes |
- She was the youngest child when her father moved from Panton to Canton, NY. She attended the district school in Canton, until she had completed the eighth grade. Although she never attended school again, she became a very intellectual woman through her own efforts. She was proficient in several languages, including German, Latin, French and Spanish, and in mathematics, particularly algebra nad geometry. By examination she secured a First Grade Certificate, and taught in Canton for several years, leaving there to go West, where she spent a few years with one of her sisters, probably Caroline, in MN. She taught school while in the West, but returned to teach in Parrishville, NY. A few years later she gave up this school to return to Hewittville, where she lived with her brother, Walter, and sister, Jane teachin in the district school until bout 1885.
It was largely through the influence and persuasion of "Aunt Lill" that her two nephew, George and William, continued their education beyond the local district school. She was very highly esteemed by them both, and a neverfailing source of inspiration.
