Mrs. Dodson's Death Marks Passing of Valley Pioneer
At the death Saturday of Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Case Dodson, who was born March 30, 1842, there passed one of the last of that sturdy band of pioneers that came to San Bernardino in 1854 led by Captain Jefferson Hunt. Mrs. Dodson since early days had been a resident of East Colton until she moved to Grand terrace several years ago.
When but a child she had seen the fierce Sioux in war dance, and later in Provo, Utah, when still a little girl she had been within hearing distance of a firece battle fought between the Utah tribe and the whites. The Mormons were victorious and the Indians were nearly wiped out.
She married Henry C. Dodson in 1856 when but 14 years old. Mr. Dodson has been dead for many years. Eleven children were born to her. Nine of which grew to adulthood. Five of these are now living. They are Mrs. Mary B. Deakins of Anaheim, Gasham Dodson of East Colton, Mrs. Charles C Bradley of Grand Terrace, William Dodson of Grand Terrace, and John Dodson of Grand Terrace. There are 10 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, and one surviving sister, Mrs. Laura Clark of San Bernardino. Besides this Mrs. Dodson had many relatives in San Bernardino and vicinity.
Mrs. Dodson passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary B. Deakins of Anaheim. The funeral services will be held at the knopsnyder chapel in Colton at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be in City cemetery in San Bernardino.
