Harold R. Herbert, 78, of Milan, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at hisdaughter's home in Lebanon, Mo. Funeral services will be 11 a.m.Monday, Nov. 10, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Visitationwill be 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be inNational Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal, with graveside military ritesperformed by American Legion Posts 569 and 200 and VFW Post 1303.Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or the Leukemia andLymphoma Society.
Mr. Herbert was born July 30, 1925, in Farmington, to John Charles andEdith May Herbert. He was raised in Rock Island and went to RockIsland High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II onthe USS Ranger. On June 19, 1948, he married Elwanda I. Griffin inMoline. Harold worked for Tri-City Blue Print, retiring in 1987. Heserved the city of Milan from 1957 to 1969 as a councilman for eightyears and mayor for four years. Harold coached in the Tri-Countybaseball league in Milan for many years. He helped as a volunteer atarea hospitals. Harold had been a member of the American Legion Post569 and VFW Post 1303 and served on the Honor Guard.
He is survived by his wife, Elwanda; three children and spouses, SusanSchmelzer, Coal Valley, Ill., Kathryn (Paul) Rock, of Lebanon, Mo.,and Kenn (Renie) Herbert, Woodbury, Minn.; six grandchildren; andseven great-grandchildren. Harold was preceded in death by his threesiblings, Kathryn Park, and Don and George Herbert.
