"Apphia Sheldon and Urian Loomis' son, Justin b.March 02, 1785 in Windsor CT was farmer in Windsor, Conn. He came alone to the area later known as Bennington NY in the winter of 1805, built a log house and kept bachelor's hall until his mother, brother and other members of the family came in July 1806. This was the first such log house erected in the area of Bennington Center. His future wife, Mary Rolph, was the first teacher in what is now the present town of Sheldon and their marriage was the first in the town of Sheldon. The Town of Sheldon was named in honor of his mother Apphia Sheldon Loomis. Justin served in the War of 1812; was a Baptist. Justin was my g3 grandfather.
According to Pioneer History of the Holland Purchase of Western New York, his brother Chauncey born September 11, 1780 in Windsor CT purchased in 1805, for himself, his mother, his brother in law P. Case, his brother Justin, and Jonah Barber, T. 10, Ranges 3 and 4. Bennington was previous to 1818 included in Sheldon. Chauncey Loomis came with his mother in July, 1806. Among those who came with him was George Loomis. Justin had come the previous winter and built a log house. This was the first building in Bennington. In 1807 Chauncey built a saw mill. It took all of the men living within 10 miles to build his barn. Chauncey worked for the Holland Company in 1808 and cut out the road from Bennington through Indian Reservation, coming upon Willink road half a mile above Red Jacket's wigwam. The first team that passed through on that road was a wagon and three yoke of oxen, going to Buffalo for salt. It took three days."
