DIED:
. . .In West Onondaga, at the residence of her son-in-law, George Montgomery, on the 2d inst., of Consumption, CHARITY GUNN, widow of Charles Gunn, aged 70 years.
She was a native of Simsbury, Hartford Co., Conn., and emigrated to Onondaga about 45 years ago where she continued to reside until the day of her death. During her residence here she saw, in reality, "the wilderness blossom as the rose," for when she came here the county of Onondaga was mostly a wilderness, and the location of Syracuse a dismal swamp. She was the last of a numerous family and leaves but one son and daughter to mourn her loss. She was a kind and affectionate mother, and her death cast a deep gloom over a numerous circle of friends, who mourn her loss, although consoled with the truth that she died in hopes of a blessed immortality. Hello, Mr. Turner
Tonight I was noodling through the Family Tree Maker Index, searching once again for my 4th great grandmother, Charity (_____), said to be from Simsbury, CT (obituary), who m. Charles Gunn. Before I saw your comprehensive web report on FTM, this was some of what I knew about Charles and Charity:
Charity was b. in Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut and died 02 January 1852 in Town of Onondaga, "at the home of her son-in-law, George Montgomery, " Onondaga County, New York. She married Charles GUNN Bef. 1812. He was born Abt. 1780, and died 10 October 1845 in Onondaga, Onondaga County, NY.
On 18 Aug 1998, I picked Charity Pettibone, dau of John and Susannah Pettibone out of the Simsbury Town Records as being the most likely candidate for Charles' wife, but had no proof.
I would be most grateful to you if you could supply me with sources for your information on Charles and Charity. I have considerable information on some of their descendants, but nothing on the antecedents of Charles and Charity.
Anxiously,
Diane Wilson Flynn

Dianne,
I have 2 sources of information. The first is a book called "Genealogy of the Pettibone Family" compiled by I. Fayett Pettibone and published in 1885. This is available on microfilm in the LDS archives. I had a copy here in Mesa, AZ but it is available in Salt Lake City if not locally. The second proves your ancestry. It is a page from a book of revolutionary war pensioners called "Ancestral Notes Supplement" vol 12 on page 231. Following is the transcription:
Pension of John Pettibone, Conn., Susannah, widow of Jonathan Penney, R8262 - Charity Gunn, Onandaga Co. N.Y., 20 Sept. 1851 age 69, deposed she was the dau. of John Pettibone and his wife Susannah; he served in the Revolutionary war from Simsbury, Hartford Co., Conn. from 6 July 1775. Charity was born 18 March (I can't read the year, I'll have to get a better copy). John Pettibone died at Simsbury 29 Feb. 1793 and his will probated there. Her mother Susannah, married Jonathon Pinney on 25 Dec 1798 St. Andrew's Church, Simsbury, Conn. Jonathan was a native of Simsbury and also served in the Rev. Jonathan Pinney died 10 July 1813, aged 76 years in Simsbury, Conn. Susannah Pinney died at Onondaga County, town of Onondaga, NY on 19 August 1839 in the home of John Pettibone. She, Charity married Charles Gunn on 11 April 1807 and stated she was the only legal representative of John Pettibone and Jonathan Pinney. John Pettibone's will of 2 April 1789 Simsbury, Conn. mentions his eldest dau. Charity, a minor under 19 years and his only son John Pettibone. His wife Susannah and son John were executors. Witnesses: Dudley Pettibone, Jonathan Pettibone and Salvanus Winphrey. Jonathan Penney and Susannah Pettibone had a daughter Amanda born June 1800.
This transcription should prove your case. You should be able to find the will mentioned in Simsbury. I haven't looked as these are not on my wife's direct line.
Good luck,
Don Turner
