- "I am searching for an ancestor, Sir John Finch, son of Sir Daniel, thesecond Earl of Nottingham. .. I will tell you our story, extracted from "Biographical and Reminiscent History of Richland, Clay and MarionCounties, Illinois " B. F. Bowen & Company, Publishers, Indianapolis,Indiana, 1909 and of course family lore. Sir John Finch was a son of SirDaniel Finch, the second Earl of Nottingham, was counsel to the Crown andunder George II, in the early part of his reign, and for his strongliberal views, and the active interest he took in espousing the cause ofliberalism, he was, by King George II, banished from the realm and comingto America, landed at the port of Boston, and married somewhere in theeastern part of Massachusetts, and after a time emigrated to New York, and founded what is taken to be the Northern branch of the Finch family. To Sir John Finch, the banished counsellor of the court of King George IIwere born two sons, whose names were respectively, Isaac F. Finch andJohn Finch: Isaac and John Finch left their homes in the state of NewYork and settled in Wyoming Valley, PA., sometimes previous to theRevolutionary War, they engaged in the milling business in an extensiveway and when the Revolutionary War broke out they were each at the headof a large family. Isaac enlisted in the Revolutionary war, John stayedhome to watch over both families and their property. They were bothkilled in the battle of the Wyoming Massacre along with John's entirefamily. We are decending from Isaac and Amy Kinney Finch. I have beensearching for John, finding many conflicting stories, But we have livingrelatives, who remember their parents telling the story of the massacre,so have no reason not to believe it to be true."
