TRANSLATION OF A LETTER WRITTEN TO HOPE MacLEAN CAMER0N (ADDRESSED ASFAITH) FROM: MR. ALEXANDER MacLEOD, K . C ., WINNIPEG ON THE PASSING OFHER FATHER, GEORGE L. MaCLEAN (1866-1937). From Margaret Cameron
March 26th, 1937
Mrs. .J.G. Cameron,
Cornwall, Ontario
Dear Faith:
The years go by and the members of the Clan MacLean like all others goone by one on the long journey from which there is no return. It is manyyears since I last saw you at Finch. I think in 1919, and I have neverforgotten you. I recall your expressing some very R. k views on marriage, which I find you have recanted as I fully expected you would. I trust youare happily settled with a family about you in the good old town ofCornwall, the old home of the Family Compacts. I am writing you toexpress my sympathy with you in the death of your father whom I knew verywell as a lad, but of whom I have seen very little during the last twentyfive years. I recall, as I write, the affection my mother bore to yourfather, Cousin Lachlan, and to his mother, whom we always called
'Grandaunt MacLean'. My father died when I was three years old and mymother and Aunt Christie MacLean lived in the old home at Finch, thencalled Gray's Corners. My mother and I often trudged out to visit CousinLachlan, Grandaunt and the family, and seventy years ago this Easter, wespent Easter Sunday at your old home. I recall our having a lovelychicken dinner, and that there were several kiddies of somewhere near myown age (then 7 years old). Allan was the one I remember particularly, especially later when he drove the Stage from Finch to Wales. I knew yourfather fairly well when he was in the cheese business, and knew yourmother and the rest of the Johnstone family when they lived atWinchester. I have one daughter, 39, living in B.C. 115.................
north of Vancouver and Victoria. She has three girls, 11, 9, and 8. Theywrite me every week, and I love them very dearly and though I live inWinnipeg, I spend much of my time in thought at their ranch at QuathiaskiCove, B.C. Tho' I am 77 years of age, I am carrying on two law offices, one in Winnipeg and one in Morven, 80 miles apart. My sister in law,Mrs. Carmichael keeps house for me, my wife having died 11 years ago andtho' living on borrowed time, I enjoy life as much as ever. There arenearly twenty of our cousins of the Camerontown MacLeans, living inWinnipeg, and we, on our clannish relationship, and I, write you anbehalf of them all to express our sympathy with you in your sorrow.Commend me to your husband (whose name is suspiciously Scotch) and toyour children, who are all my dear cousins of the good old MacLean clan. When you write your mother will you pass on my sympathy to her in herbereavement ....
Yours affectionately,
A.I. MacLeod (1860-1937/8)
Note; Goldfield, West of Finch, was known also as Camerontown. ManyCameron families settled there.
