"John B. Wilhite supplies us with the following story of the trip from IA to KS by John Samuel Redenbaugh and his wife Elizabeth Ann WinterRedenbaugh.
" She had a book which her mother Elizabeth Pfrimmer Winter hadwritten in long hand, describing symptoms of illness along with namesof plants and herbs to administer to her family. This was last seen inthe home of Nellie Miller in Topeka KS.
In 1867, looking for greener pastures, the family along with otherRedenbaugh relatives, migrated to KS. There were 67 families in th ewagon train, including a minister. They rested at the camp on Sundays, and held church services. Each evening, the wagons were placed in acircle and the stock put inside. The men took turns watching at nightbecause of the Indians. After supper, they sat around the camp fire, sang church hymns and pray ed. They crossed the Missouri River nearWesten MO. ( between
Kansas city and St Joesph MO) By fastening logs to the wagon wheels,to float them across. J ohn Redenbaugh, a nephew of Samuels, went toBurton KS. Elizabeth and Samuel were the first settlers in what isnow, Vassar KS. "
