If you are looking for early records in Wigtownshire there may be some inthe volumes of :
The Exchequer Rolls of Scotland

Published by the Authority of the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty'sTreasury, under the direction of the Deputy Clerk-Register of Scotland.
However, it is perhaps best to try and work backwards, perhaps startingwith information kindly supplied by Diana, Crawford, Carrie, Wayne andthe research helpers listed on Leigh-Ann's web page.
Examples in the Index of Vol.XI AD1497-1501 of the Exchequer Roll are :

Below from Jim Houston
M'kerlie's "History of the Lands and Their Owners in Galloway, Volume 1puts "Killaster" in the parish of Stoneykirk and attaches its ownershipto the M'Cullochs, which seems consistent with the transaction involvingWilliam Houston. Here is what he says on page 358:
"The exact position of the families holding Ardwall and Killaster, inrelationship to one another, we fear we cannot trace; and therefore, asthe properties are now one, we will treat them as such. Killaster doesnot now appear on the Valuation Roll; but it lies immediately in the rearof the house of Ardwall; and a small portion of the ruins remains, andmay still remain, of the residence. A burn called Killaster runs throughthe grounds of Ardwall House. Killaster is said to have been thehunting-seat of the M'Cullochs -----"
Here is something else that may interest you on a McCulloch-Houston landtransaction for a property in Stoneykirk Parish, Wigtownshire namedKillaster (Ed Thompson has taken a shot at translating this. If you areinterested in this, I'll forward you that message)

Included below is an OCR transcription (proofread but probably notperfect) from pages 744 and 745 of, "THE REGISTER OF THE GREAT SEAL OFSCOTLAND, A.D. 1609-1620",and shows(I think) the link between WilliamHouston and Katherine Vaus, his spouse. As you can see, it is in Latin. Ibelieve that William Houston and Katherine Vaus are my 11thgreat-grandparents.
