  • Notes
    • The census records 1850-1870 do put Samuel and Reuben living next doortogether as probable son and father with their respective families. The families must have moved from Ohio to Crawford County, Illinoistogether between 1840 - 1850, because in the 1840 census Reuben Tharpis living in Burlington, Licking County, Ohio and in the 1850 censusthe family is living in Crawford County, Illinois. His daughterPermelia (born 1842) is listed in the 1850 census as his first childto be born in Illinois. In 1848, Reuben Tharp puchased two tracts ofland in Crawford County, Illinois. No doubt, Samuel farmed on one ofthe tracts of land and Reuben the other tract, since they were ofequal acreage and situated next to each other as the census shows bothmen with their families living next to each other.

Reuben Tharp married twice per the census records due the ages of hislarge family of children and his wife Nancy being younger, and aroundthe same age as his son Samuel. The seperation of the last fewchildren who were born in Ohio is difficult in determining who theirmother may have been, because the marriage date and age of his secondwife Nancy cannot be confirmed. A few of the children born in Ohiomay be children by his wife Nancy or not. The children born inIllinois are most likely by his wife Nancy.

Ruth Matheny Tharp was listed in the 1840 census record with ReubenTharp probably in Burlington Township, Licking County, Ohio per thecensus. Reuben is given the age of between 40-50 years and Ruth wasgiven the age of between 30-40 years. This cannot be Nancy Tharp,Reuben's second wife since Nancy was born in 1822. In 1840 Nancy wasless than 20 years of age.
Permelia was born in Illinois in 1842, and she is probably Nancy'sdaughter by Reuben.
So, Ruth was living in 1840, but Reuben must have remarried by 1842,indicating that Ruth was no longer living. Ruth then probably diedbetween 1840-1841. It is assumed that Ruth died in Ohio and veryshortly after her death that Reuben remarried to Nancy, and moved hisentire family to Illinois.

Children known with the 1850 - 1870 census are listed from the censusrecords, Samuel, Reuben, James, James Eveland, Rhoda, Sarah, Martha,Josiah, Permelia, Susana, Loretta, Mary, and Amanda.

However, children other than Samuel and those listed above before the1850 census who have left home to marry or otherwise were listed onhttp://worldconnect.rootsweb.com Internet site.
