Index to Original Marriage Certificate Pre-1836 to 1925 MarriageRecords - Davenport, Scott County, Iowa lists Peter Juhl and LillieAnna Stoecken married 28 April 1898 [21 Nov 2004-from Internet sourceDavenport Public Library Genealogy & Local History at www.qcmemory.org- SLJuhl]
From the records we now know for sure that Peter Juhl did immigrate tothe United States on June 14, 1892 with his parents and siblings whenhe was 15-16 years old from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany; That in 1898he married Lilly Anna Stoecken, and that on October 30, 1899 he becamea United States citizen. He lived in Davenport for at least 8 yearsby the 1900 census, and had one daughter Evalina then with his wifeLilly. He must have been working or living in or near Martin County,Minnesota in 1909 due to a post card and several others addressed tohim at that time up until the early 1930's. In 1935 he was in MercerCounty, Illinois, and married Florence Hand Jacobs. Peter &Florence's son George was born in 1937 in Joy, Mercer County,Illinois. He died in Aledo, Mercer County, Illinois in July of 1970.
"George cannot remember a great deal being mentioned when he wasgrowing up about the Juhl family. He does remember visiting relativesin Fairmont and Welcome, Minnesota a few times; He also has some postcards that were his fathers, but nearly half of them are in German andhe has not had them translated as yet to know what they say. Some ofthe communities in Martin County, Minnesota were so small thataddresses were not always used. It is this way even now in Granada,Minnesota, where some of the family are from. If a name is on a cardit gets to the person it's addressed to even without an address.Peter Juhl was names after his father and grandfather. The 1970obituary states that Peter Juhl arrived in the United States on June14, 1892, and the above resource states his naturalization took placein 1899 in Davenport, Iowa.
It is known that Peter met and married Florence in 1935, and theylived in Joy, Mercer County, Illinois for many years. He did have astroke in 1965, and was in a nursing care facility in Aledo, Illinoisuntil his death in 1970. Florence was also living in Aledo at thattime to be closer to her husband. There is no indication that he wasinvolved in either of the great wars.
His son George tells of Peter still working at his trades up into hislate seventies and early eighties before his death at 92 years of age. There is no mention of any other children in Peter's obituary exceptfor the one daughter, Evalina (Evelyn), who died before him. WhenFlorence and Peter married he was 57 years old. George was unawarethat at the time he was born his mother had a total of nine livingchildren as stated on his birth certificate and in her obituary shehad two sons listed who had died before her for a total of ninechildren. Sometime after George was born two of his half brothersthen must have died. This information is from studying those papersmentioned, and are things that George was not aware of at all. Georgedoes remember that his dad was previously married and had possibly oneto two children; He remembers names such as Lena (Evalina), andWillie, but was not sure as to how they were related. He believesthat Lena died early. He cannot remember his father's first wife'sname. He did remember that Peter (his father) had five othersiblings. [Interview with George Peter Juhl, June 06, 2004 - per wifeS.L. Juhl]".
Side Note: There has been family comments that Peter Juhl's family isof German royalty. It cannot be discounted, but there are no recordsthat were kept by the "Juhl" family to indicate that it is true ornot.

Note: From researching the census records from 1895-1930, it wouldappear that the Juhl's primarily lived in German American communitiesin Davenport, Scott County, Iowa and in Martin County, Minnesota. That Peter Juhl Sr. and Hedwig were not fluent in English, and theirprimary language was German. Peter H. Juhl could speak, read, andwrite English and German the same. He probably was bi-lingual sincehe was able to become a citizen in 1899. It is believed from themessages on the post cards written by Peter H. Juhl and his siblingsthat they also could read & write English. Peter's wife was born inIowa, but lived in the German community in Davenport, and she tooprobably was bi-lingual in both languages. Peter & Lilly themselveslived in the heart of the German community along with their parents inDavenport, Iowa. The earlier post cards of the family were written inGerman, but as time went on they became primarily written in English. There are also letters in Englsih written to Florence in themid-1930's from Peter.

NOTE: It would appear that Peter's daughter was living with him alongwith his grandson William (Willie) in 1935 when Peter and Florencewere married in October, 1935. There is also a letter from Florenceto Peter mentioning that "Lena" probably missed her. Florence was inRock Island, Illinois at the time helping her daughter Pauline with anew baby.
Earl & Elmer Juhl along with Edwin & wife (Adelia) Stoltenberg allattended Peter Juhl's funeral after driving down from Minnesota. Thiswas recorded by Florence Hand Juhl, Peter's wife, on a list ofrelatives who had attended Peter's services along with money amountscontributed instead of flowers. She noted specifically after theirnames, "Relatives Minnesota".
