- "The McLaren/Shaw connection I am looking for is from either Scotland orIreland. My great grandfather, Duncan, and his brother, Archie wereraised by their Grandmother Shaw on their mother's side after theirfather, Charles, died in a mining accident and their mother, whose name Ido not have, fell ill and could not care for them. Duncan was born inPaisley in 1851. Archie was the youngest of the two but I do not knowhis birthdate, or there were other siblings. Duncan came to the U.S. in1864 at the age of 14 on a potato boat out of Glasgow, and eventuallysettled in PA. He later sent for Archie. Both boys seem to have beenawfully young to be making the voyage by themselves but I guess thingswere a lot different in those days. I can find no record of their birthsin Scotland. The fact that the mother's name does not appear on Duncan'sdeath certificate (only his father's) and that I have been unable totrace Archie since his arrival in PA has not helped in the search."
