Notes |
- Lieutenant and Adjutant Sholto Douglas Sorlie, formerly of the 68th Regiment of Light Infantry, and late of the 2nd Veteran Battalion, who died On Tuesday, at Leeds, in 1839 in his 68th year, was the son of James Sorlie who married Mary Ferguson on 27 May 1770 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. She was the daughter of Alexander Ferguson .
Sholto was at the battle of Salamanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Navelle, Orthes, Peninsular &c. 'He was a good officer and a brave soldier'. He was born on the 21st Dec 1771, therefore died in his 68th year Sholto may have been a corporal before being commisioned. And a Sergeant-Major of the 7th (or Queen's own) Regiment of Light Dragoons? Perhaps he got his commission on joining the Veterans Battalion.
Sholto Douglass Sorlee married Mary Bellwood on 8 Feb 1796 at Yarm, York, England. It looks as though James Sorlie was baptised on 12 Jun 1743 in Dollar, Clackmanan, Scotland, the son of James Sorlie and Margaret Drysdail.
