Elkins, James Reynolds, Polly 28 August 1827

16 January 2007; Research by Compiler; To confirm that James Elkinsnor Mary (Polly) Reynolds Elkins were in the 1840 census in Kentuckyas well as not in the 1840 census in Indiana. It is believed thatJames Elkins died and Mary married James C. Graham in 1840 prior tothe completion of the 1840 census in Indiana.
There is only one James Elkins listed in Kentucky 1840 census and heis in Pike County, age 30-40 with 3 younger males and 1 female 30-40with 5 younger females.
Doubtful this is them, because there are too many children.
**There is no Mary Elkins listed in the 1840 Census for Kentucky, norin Whitley, Pulaski or any other county in Kentucky. 1840-Census:No James Elkins is listed in the state of Indiana."
I used "EXACT MATCHES" to try and find them, and the soundex on thesurname."
CONCLUSION: James Elkins died in Indiana before 1840, and Mary(Polly) Reynolds Elkins re-married to James C. Graham in November1840. William H. Elkins was raised by his half-uncle Amaziah Elkins, and Peter Elkins was living in the household of their half-uncleJoseph Elkins, Amaziah's brother; Both boys then were raised by theGrt Uncle William Elkins family. It is believed that Eliza stayedwith her mother through her young years until her marriage to FranklinHamilton; Even so, Mary Polly A. Reynolds Elkins Graham stayed nearthe Hamilton's over the years prior to her death, as evidenced by thecensus records showing her living with the Hamilton's at one time inthe 1870 Federal census, and she remained close to her son William H.Elkins as well (Mary with her sons, William H. Elkins, George F.Graham, and Aaron A. Graham are buried near each other in the samecemetery row in the Russellville Cemetery, Putnam County, Indiana, aswell as, James C. Graham). Peter Elkins is no longer listed in thecensus records after 1850. It is assumed he has passed away between1850-1860 until more information is possibly found on him to indicateotherwise.
