"DUNCAN MACGREGOR of ARDCHOILLE called Ladasach or "the Lordly; ' wee eonof the Tutor of GIenstrae who probably became rightful chief but wasexcluded by the Campbells in 1519 and who led the clan 1528-1545 (seeabove the House and Gang of Gregor Maclain'' " senior cadets of the 2ndChief). Duncan ladasach himself was ringleader of all the moatrecalcitrant Gregarach of his time doubtless as " righteous heir to TheMacGregor."
A blood-feud with the MacLarens perhaps arose from MacGregor claimsthrough a MacLaren heiress, as their crests are similar and in 1682 theGregarach slew the MacLaren vicar of Balquhidder, claiming the right toshare with the MacIarens (descendants of a local Abbot) the privilege ofbeing first to enter Balquhidder Church on Sundays, the MacGregor weredesperate for land and for Easter Week 1548 Duncan Ladasach led asurprise night attack on peaceful homesteads that (followed by anotherMacGregor onslaught in 1558) nearly exterminated the Clan Laren andoverran their lands in Balquhidder.
He the mentor of the young 8th Chief in the raid that captured StruanRobertson 1545, and in 1648 the Menzies chief inserted a special clausein lessee forbidding lands to be sub-let to " Duncan MacGregor MacPhadrig(ladasach's a patronymics). He became Tutor of Glenstrae during the 9thChief's minority ca. 1550 and slew Alasdair Odhar MacGregor of Morenishfor acknowledging Campbell of Glenorchy as his chief; was outlawed formurder 1551 and became a noted freebooter " Ardchoille " becoming theMacGregor slogan; was captured, apparently by a treacherous tuck, andbeheaded et Finlarig by Colin (Sir) Campbell of Glenorchy (" GreyColin"), 18 June, 1551 He married Mary Campbell of Ardkinglas, and hadwith other issue,,
1. GREGOR, his heir.
2. Malcolm Ruadh beheaded with his father and elder brother
8. Patrick Dubh, murdered in Balquhidder by rival Gregarach of the ClanDugall Ciar the usurping chiefs' branch, 4 Oct. 1574.
After Duncan Ladasach's execution, his branch of the Gregarach led
Such wild and hunted lives in the misty mountains that they became
known as MacEagh or " Sons of the Mist."..."
Burke's has a lot more information on the Macgregors.
