Notes |
- Son of the Seventh Earl. The "Good Earl." Married Jean Lyons (1586), daughter of Lord Glamis, widow of Robert Douglas, of Lochleven and mother of Earl of Morton.
Made Privy Councillor in 1573 and Sheriff of Burwick in 1574. Also appointed Lieutenant General of Scotland at this time. In attempting to save his kinsmen, Earl Morton, he was charged with high treason in 1581 and had to flee from Scotland for a time. He was reconciled with James V in 1582, but banished in 1584 again, after the rebellion of Mar and Gworie. In 1585 restoration of estates were made to him, and he was received back into favor after defeating the Earl of Arran and capturing Stirling Castle for the King. In 1586, he was restored as Warden of the Marches and Lieutenant General. Made Earl of Morton in 1586 and died in 1588.
The title Earl of Morton reverts to the crown, as he dies without issue.
The Angus title then reverts to the son of the second son of the Fifth Earl of Angus, who married in 1501 Elizabeth Auchenleck and who held in her own right the title of Glenbervie.
