Points out "I think it arguable that the Margaret who married JohnMacKenzie was the daughter of Earl John and his wife Marjorie Mar andthat a daughter of Isabel and David Strathbogie would have been a littleold to be getting married and having a first child about 1300. Also, ifyou read the article in THE GENEALOGIST ( n.s., vol. XXII,
pp. 105-1090) closely on page 110, you will note that it says that "on 5March 1310, the King granted to Bartholomew of Badlesmere and Margaret, his wife, the castle and manor of Chilham, which Alexander de Bailleulhad held by curtesy of the inheritance of Isabel, his wife, whose son andheir/John, late Earl of Athol, had been hanged for treason." As Iinterpret this text, it
seems to say that Bartholomew of Badlesmere was married to MargaretStrathbogie, and that after Isabel's death and that of Earl John, thecastle and manor of Chilham were granted to Bartholomew and Margaretbecause Margaret was entitled to succeed to it as Isabel's heir, Isabel'soriginal heir John being deceased. I suspect that since the castle hadbeen held by curtsey as Isabel's property, it passed to her immediatesurviving heir, Margaret of Baddlesmere, and not to the heirs of her son,Earl John. Earl John probably
had a daughter also named Margaret in honor of his sister, and it wasthis daughter who married John MacKenzie. Isabel's daughter Margaret, ifit was she who married Bartholomew, could not have been the spouse ofJohn MacKenzie because at least until 1310, she was married to someoneelse--Bartholomew.
Also, since John MacKenzie lived until 1338, Margaret was not left ayoung widow to marry Badlesmere before 1310. "
