    • James Chalmers (ca. 1713-1764) was a native of Arbroath who moved to Dundee and established himself there as a bookseller, printer and publisher. He was born in Aberdeen and baptized on 8 January 1713 at Dyke, Moray, the eldest surviving son of James Chalmers (bap. 1686, d. 1744), professor of divinity at Marischal College, Aberdeen (1728ľ 44), and his cousin Jean Chalmers. It is generally cliamed that he invented the adhesive postage stamp.
      He has an entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
