- Memories from Pat Gladstones
Auntie Helen always had the air of one who was really due higher things and more subservience. She practically brought up all the younger ones and was very conscious of the young men whom she might have married except for the Great War. By the time I met her face to face in 1948 she had made a fairly disastrous marriage to what we knew as uncle Harry. I think that there might have been a bit of independence and perhaps some money gained but he wasn't worth it! Grannie Burns said on the day of the wedding, when some flowers arrived, "Is'nt it wonderful how kind people are when you are in trouble"! There was also a son by Harry's previous marriage, who was disabled in some way but once again by the time I got to Melbourne he had died. She was always very kind to me, but a little horrifid by my harum scarum ways.
